Society of Management Accountants of Prince Edward Island Legacy Award
Faculty of Business
Cycle: Fall
Value: Amount Varies
Criteria:
Granted to the returning student with the highest average in Cost Accounting 3120.
Background:
Support to UPEI students from the Society of Management Accountants of Prince Edward Island (CMA PEI) originated in 1991 with the establishment of an annual award given to a graduating student with the highest average mark in Cost Accounting Business 411 and Business 412. In 2011, the criteria was changed to reflect a new accreditation process in the accounting field, allowing students to enter the Certified Management Accountants Strategic Leadership program. In 2014, the Society of Management Accountants, the Certified General Accountants, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants across Canada amalgamated. PEl's amalgamated group is now CPAPEI, Chartered Professional Accountants of PEI. Members of the former Society of Management Accountants renamed this award as a legacy of their support to student awards at UPEI, and changed the criteria to reflect the amalgamation of the three accounting bodies and the dissolution of their Society. This award is an appropriate legacy for the Society of Management Accountants in PEI, which evolved from the RIA (Registered Industrial Accountant) designation which was primarily focused on providing cost accountant services.
