Background:
Elinor (MacDonald) MacLellan was born in Glenfinnan, PEI, the oldest of eight children. As a teenager she graduated from Prince of Wales College in 1943 and then began her teaching career. In the 1960's she further pursued her education and obtained first her Bachelor's and later her Masters degree in Education from Boston University. She returned to her native Island as its first resource/guidance teacher to continue upon a career in teaching and education that has spanned fifty years. She was a Special Education Consultant to the Province of Prince Edward Island, and she played a major role in the Block Program in Elementary Education as an instructor in the areas of child development and the education of exceptional children. In 1988 she was awarded the National President's Award for Continuous and Exemplary Service" by the Canadian Mental Health Association. In 1989 she was admitted to the Order of Canada and in 1992 she was awarded a Commemoration Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. In 1993 she was awarded an honourary degree from UPEI in recognition of her service to the field of education. And in 2003 she was granted the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal. Elinor was held in the highest esteem within her profession and earned the affection and respect of two generations of teachers and students. This award was created by Elinor (MacDonald) MacLellan in 1995 and was perpetuated by her husband Donald MacLellan in memory of Elinor following her passing in 2004.
