Granted each year to a UPEI student who: is a single parent, is in financial need, and is in full-time undergraduate studies.
Background:
This award was established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Mr. Donald Pickard in honour of his father Walter W. Pickard and his mother, Laura M. Pickard. Walter W. Pickard was a prominent Charlottetown businessman well-known for his community service, particularly his support of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Walter received his education at West Kent School and attended Prince of Wales College before entering the world of business. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed curling, golf, sailing and hunting. Laura (nee McLaine) Pickard was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Known to her many grandchildren as "Gigi", Laura displayed an extraordinary commitment to her family and concern for her community. Walter and Laura were members of Trinity United Church. They had four children, sons Don, Alan and Mark, and daughter Jeanne. Walter passed away in 1996 and Laura in 2009.
