Criteria:
Awarded to a student in the UPEI Faculty of Nursing who has the highest academic achievement in their first year of study and who is not already on a scholarship. The successful student must be returning to the second year of the program at UPEI.
Background:
This annual scholarship was established by Cordelia Harrington Ramsay-Butler. Mrs. Cordelia Harrington Ramsay-Butler, a native of Spring Valley, PEI, attended Prince of Wales College and later entered Nursing at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, where she received her RN degree. Mrs. Harrington Ramsay-Butler served on staff at the Prince County Hospital as head nurse for 11 years prior to going to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where she accepted a supervisory position in the Maternity Wing of Medicine Hat General Hospital. Later, she and her husband moved to Los Angeles, California, where she accepted a position at the Good Samaritan Hospital and worked there for several years. Also, she became Director of Nursing at the California Hospital in Extended Care. Later, she retired for a few years then went to work at Queen of Angeles Hospital in Los Angeles for 7 years until retirement in 1986. In establishing this scholarship Mrs. Harrington Ramsay-Butler stated "I wish to assist worthy students to enter this rewarding profession."
