Criteria:
Awarded to the full-time UPEI student majoring in Sociology, Anthropology, or Sociology/Anthropology, entering fourth year and who attained the highest overall average in their previous 20 courses. The recipient will be a PEI resident, as indicated by their place of high school graduation, and will not be in receipt of any other scholarship.
Background:
Dr. Clarence J. Murphy (1911-1986) was born in Montague, PE. He received Bachelor of Arts from SDU in 1934 and received both M.A. and Ph.D. from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He taught at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1942, he joined the faculties of SDU and PWC, and in 1945 was appointed Carnegie Professor of Economics and Sociology at both institutions. He then joined Department of Sociology when UPEI was formed and taught until his retirement in 1974. Throughout his teaching career he participated extensively in university affairs, serving as Department Chairman and as a member of The Board of Governors and Senate, and was active in the co-operative and credit union movements in PEI. The family of Dr. Clarence J. Murphy established this award in his memory.
