Background:
The Avery Scholarship (now the Avery Award) was originally established by the owners of Cavendish Figurines Ltd., Jeannette Arsenault and Don Maxfield and their staff as a contribution to their Island community in appreciation of the legacy of L. M. Montgomery on PEI and in tribute to the Spirit of Anne". The fictional Avery Scholarship in L. M. Montgomery's famous novel Anne of Green Gables was the object of fierce competition between Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe and was also the factor that caused them to end their long feud. The Avery Scholarship allowed Anne to attend Queen's University for a year before returning to become a writer and teacher on her beloved Island. In November 2016 Jeannette and Don agreed to revise the original criteria for the scholarship and create an award that would support UPEI students who have an interest in L. M. Montgomery and have a desire to pursue excellence in writing while working with a mentor from the Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute (LMMI) at UPEI. The successful candidate will participate in a learning opportunity with the LMMI through contributions to the lmmontgomery.ca website and other social media outreach efforts by the LMMI. The learning opportunity project will be coordinated between the LMMI mentor and successful student recipient.
