Sarah Grimble and Professor Catherine Innes-Parker Memorial Award
Faculty of Arts
Cycle: Fall
Value: Amount Varies
Criteria:
Granted each fall to a full-time UPEI student registered in the Faculty of Arts with the highest final grade in English 1210 in their first year of study.
Background:
Sarah Grimble was the eldest of six children. She was born in 1921, and lived for most of her childhood years in London, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba. When she graduated from Rupert's Land Girls School in Winnipeg, she attended the University of Manitoba for one year aspiring to obtain a degree in English. However, the following year, her sister Mary was ready for university and there were not sufficient funds for both to attend. Sarah felt it was more important for Mary to go to university, so she withdrew and eventually secured a position with the Royal Bank of Canada, where she worked until she retired. This was typical of the generosity which characterized Sarah's entire life. Sarah was the ideal "maiden aunt," much beloved by her five nieces and one nephew. Sarah lavished love and attention on her family, visiting their homes often and helping out when emergencies struck. Sarah loved children, and for many years was the leader of a cub pack. The London house had a large property, some of which was undeveloped, and she built a campfire circle there for "her boys," to whom she was dedicated. Sarah Grimble died on September 27, 2003, one week before her 82nd birthday. Her last months were spent struggling with illness. Yet, through it all, she remained cheerful, sweet-natured and loving, as she had been through her entire life. Her niece, Catherine, established an award in her memory at UPEI which continued until Catherine's passing. Professor Innes-Parker, who passed away in 2019, left a significant gift in her estate to create an award in perpetuity. To acknowledge this gift and Catherine's pedagogical and financial contributions to UPEI, this award was created to memorialize both Catherine and Sarah. It is the hope of the family that this award will help a student in the first year of his/her university career, the time at which Sarah had to withdraw from university for financial reasons. This award is in tribute to their memory and life-long generosity.
