This prize is established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Eileen and Lawson Drake. She worked at the Polyclinic in Charlottetown; the Geneva General Hospital, Geneva, New York; the Tompkins County Memorial Hospital, Ithaca, New York; The Dr. Eric Found Health Centre, Charlottetown; and in private duty and home care nursing. She retired in 1988. Lawson Drake graduated from PWC in 1948 and from McGill University (Macdonald College) in 1950. In 1959 he received his Masters degree from Cornell University and returned to PWC to teach Biology until 1966. From 1963 to 1966 his teaching duties included Anatomy and Physiology for students in the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving his Ph.D. from Dalhousie University in 1969, he became the first Chair of the Biology Department at UPEI. Dr. Drake served as Dean of Science from 1985 to 1991; as Dean he chaired the Nursing Education Transition Committee whose work established the School of Nursing at UPEI. He retired in 1994. The Drakes believe that the nursing care of infants and children demands special qualities of professionalism, compassion and commitment. To encourage the development of these qualities in student nurses they have made this prize available to a nursing student demonstrating excellence in child and family care.
