Background:
This scholarship was established by Sue Loucks and family in fond memory of husband and father, Dr. Leon Loucks (1939-2002). Dr. Leon Loucks, UPEI Professor of Chemistry, was a major driving force in the establishment of a strong Chemistry Department at UPEI. Throughout his career he set a very high standard for teaching and encouraging students, which was recognized in part through teaching awards, including the UPEI Excellence in Teaching Award (1989). He conducted meticulous research, and served as respected mentor to colleagues. Dr. Loucks was Chair of Chemistry for 10 years, served on the UPEI Senate, Board of Governors and as President of the UPEI Faculty Association. One of his most lasting contributions to chemistry at UPEI was his leadership role in the planning and design of the K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, our state-of-the art facility which opened in 1996. Beyond the university, Dr. Loucks served extensively, including Board Member of the National Museum of Science and Technology, the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, was Chair of the Provincial Environment Committee, Member of Sherwood Town Council including a term as Chair, a Member of the Queen's Regional Health Board, the PEI Cancer Research Council, Federation of Canadian Municipalities national board, and numerous committees in his church. He was a Recipient of the Canadian Cancer Society Medal of Courage (1998), the City of Charlottetown Citizenship Award (1998), Cancer Institute of Canada National Certificate of Appreciation (2001) and the PEI Literacy Reading Group named its annual community award in his honour.
