Canadian Federation of University Women Charlottetown Graduate Scholarships: Arts & Education and Science & Nursing

Criteria:
Awarded to two (2) masters and/or doctoral students who have resided in PEI for 5 of the last 15 years. Eligible applicants will be enrolled in or applying to a Masters or PhD program on a full-time basis at UPEI, as well as UPEI graduates who are enrolled in or applying to a Masters or PhD program on a full-time basis at another accredited Canadian university. Applicants applying to a graduate program must be accepted and enrolled in the program by September 1 of the application year. Two scholarships will be available to applicants pursuing a graduate degree in the area of Arts or Education and Science, Veterinary Science, or Nursing. Upholding the commitment of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) since 1919, preference will be given to female students. Selection criteria include academic performance, contributions and potential contributions to the field of study, and career goals and aspirations.

Background:
Founded in 1919, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is a national, non-profit, non-partisan organization of nearly 10,000 women university graduates in 122 clubs across Canada. It is a member of the International Federation of University Women, an affiliation of 77 national associations and federations around the world. CFUW provides its members with an opportunity to enjoy fellowship, to be stimulated and informed, to promote education through the awarding of scholarships, bursaries and grants, and to improve the status of women and human rights in general. The Canadian Federation of University Women Charlottetown received its charter on August 16, 1955. Since that time, the Club has worked tirelessly to educate its members and the general public on matters of importance to all women. Studies included: the Marriage Act, minimum wage for women, pornography, abortion, child abuse, and education in depth. CFUW Charlottetown members have presented briefs to governments, Royal Commissions, Standing Committees, and Planning Committees. In addition, they have organized public seminars on career counselling for high school girls, children at risk, and crisis management for women and organized Atlantic conferences on Women in the Creative Arts, and Women's Issues in the Community. CFUW Charlottetown was instrumental in founding UNICEF PEI. CFUW Charlottetown published an historical booklet on Inkerman House. They organized a exhibition of the paintings of a former member, Frieda Creelman, a well-known Island artist and art teacher. Members are encouraged to prepare and present resolutions on issues of concern to be directed to the appropriate levels of government for consideration. In 2003, after two years of study, CFUW Charlottetown drafted and presented a Resolution on Legal Aid in Canada which was ratified by the National CFUW at its Annual General Meeting in Wolfville, NS. Members of the CFUW Charlottetown have served on national and regional committees, and have received many individual awards for service to the community. CFUW Charlottetown continues to inform its members on current issues so that they may add their voice to those involved in improving the status of women. In 2013, UPEI was pleased to assume management of the Canadian Federation of University Women Charlottetown's scholarship program and funds to continue to grant scholarships. With the same spirit and intent upheld by members since the club's inception, two scholarships are awarded at masters and doctoral level, named for the Canadian Federation of University Women Charlottetown.
