Carnegie Foundation Graduate Scholarship in Island Studies
Faculty of Arts
Cycle: Summer
Value: Amount Varies
Recommended By: MAIS Committee
Process: Recommendation Required
Criteria:
Awarded to a student in the Master of Arts in Island Studies program. Preference will be given to a student whose work focuses on questions of economic or social policy as it relates to small islands, including Prince Edward Island.
Background:
In 1933, the US-based Carnegie Foundation funded an endowment to support a Chair of Economics and Sociology shared between Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan's University. Dr. John Croteau was appointed to this position from 1935-49 when he left to assume a position at Notre Dame. For many years, this fund was administered by the Province of Prince Edward Island until being transferred to the University of Prince Edward Island in 2001. Given that there is no longer a Chair in this field of study, revenue from the Carnegie Foundation gift has resulted in a principal value of more than $100,000 in the endowed fund. In UPEI's efforts to honour the wishes of all donors and ensure that funds are used in a manner consonant with the spirit and intention of original gifts, in 2010 the UPEI Board of Governors approved the allocation of the annual interest to support a scholarship for students in the Master of Arts in Island Studies program.
