UPEI Adult Education Award
Any Faculty
Cycle: Fall
Value: Amount Varies
Deadline: October 1
Process: Application
Criteria:
Awarded to an adult learner, defined as an individual who has been at least seven years absent from high school, who is studying part-time toward an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate, has identified a contribution to community volunteerism through their personal statement, and is in financial need. Eligible applicants will have completed at least two UPEI courses in the previous academic year.
Background:
In 1997, the Director of the UPEI Department of Extension and Summer Sessions requested that Rural Development Council funds from a maturing deposit and funds from a miscellaneous UPEI account be combined and endowed to create an adult certificate fund. The Rural Development Council functioned as a community development organization in the late 1960's and 1970's and had as one of its objectives the enhancement of adult education in Prince Edward Island. While the fund was established, no award had been provided as of the creation of these terms. In 2011, these terms were established in consultation with the Director of Life-long Learning. The Centre for Life-long Learning develops and delivers a broad range of continuing education courses and workshops, summer institutes, language programs, and other services to help meet the needs of life-long learners. Located in Don and Marion MacDougall Hall, the Centre offers short courses, online courses, credit and non-credit certificates, and customized training. In addition, the Centre provides advice and support for adult learners wishing to return to school.
