Granted to a graduating student from the four year Nursing Program or the Accelerated Nursing Program at UPEI who demonstrated a commitment, dedication, and perseverance in their nursing studies. Preference given to a student who has one or more dependents. Academic achievement will not be a defining criterion.

Background:
Mrs. Vera Murray, Dr. Christina Murray's grandmother who passed away April 2, 2015, made a significant impact on the personal and professional lives of her family. Without her wisdom and encouragement to pursue an education, Christina (BA Psychology/Philosophy, UPEI; BScN, UPEI, MN, University of Calgary; and PhD Nursing, University of Alberta), and a generous supporter of awards for UPEI nursing students, would not have achieved her educational and professional goal. From an early age, she stressed the importance of women having an opportunity to pursue education. While she did not complete junior high school, she was a firm believer that it was through education that women could develop a professional career enabling them to support themselves and their children independently. She stressed that anything was possible but the key to achieving this would be through doing well in school and pursuing post-secondary education. Growing up in rural PEI, the option of attending school was a luxury she could not afford or achieve. She often dreamed - and spoke - about what she could have been or done if she had had the opportunity to go to school. One of her many gifts to Dr. Murray was instilling the importance of education. Dr. Christina Murray has established this award in recognition of the many sacrifices that parents and their children make while a parent in pursuing a nursing degree to better provide for their family. It is Dr. Murray's hope that the recipients of this award will use the funds to celebrate with their families the achievement that they have all sacrificed for in achieving a nursing degree.
