Background:
Engineers PEI, formerly the Association of Professional Engineers of Prince Edward Island, have been supporting awards for UPEI students since 1994. Nine awards are currently supported by this membership, three of which are named after distinguished PEI engineers whom were active and instrumental members in the Association of Professional Engineers. The establishment of a PEI Branch of the Engineering Institute of Canada (E.l.C.) in 1952 brought together a group of engineers. Eventually, this group was responsible for the formation of the Association of Professional Engineers of Prince Edward Island. At a meeting of the E.I.C. Branch in October 1954, a decision was taken to proceed with the setting up of A.P.E.P.E.I. and the P.E.I. Engineering Profession Act was passed and given Royal assent on March 18, 1955. The Association opened its first permanent office in Charlottetown in 1989. Over the lifetime of the Association, both the volume and value of engineering work undertaken on the Island have increased substantially and this is reflected in the increase in the number of engineers practicing in PEI. Until 2014, UPE1 educated future engineers through a two year diploma program that required all graduates to continue their education at another institution to complete an engineering degree. In September 2014, the University of Prince Edward Island established the Sustainable Design Engineering Degree Program, a four year program. Engineers PEI played an active role in advising the university in the development of this degree program.
