Background:
The Rotary Club of Charlottetown was founded in 1917, and has a proud history of serving the residents of PEI. As well as serving the community every year, it has supported many local projects including significant support to Camp Gencheff, the Rotary Soup Kitchen project, and its ongoing work with Easter Seals and the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. It will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017 and is experiencing rapid membership growth as it embarks on raising support for many more major projects. For many years, the Rotary Club of Charlottetown very generously supported an award for international students at UPEI. In 2016, the Club renewed its commitment to UPEI students, supporting a student with disabilities. Students with disabilities are applying to universities at unprecedented rates. Accessibility Services is focused on providing academic and other supports for these students at our university. In 2016, there were 433 students registered at UPEI for these supports as compared to 126 students in 2009. Statistically, 14.3% of Canadians live with a long term and/or recurring disability- one in seven Canadians. Only 14% of those with a disability go on to achieve a University degree as compared to 23% of the population with no disability. Students with disabilities represent approximately 9% of total post secondary population. The largest demographic of students in need are students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and students struggling with diagnosed mental health disorders. These awards for UPEI students with a disability will not only assist them with the financial burdens experienced in post-secondary school; it will also build confidence and pride for every recipient - something that is critical to the overall success of these students.
