Granted to a UPEI researcher who has shown excellence in health research during the previous year and based on: acknowledgement of excellence in research by the applicant/nominee's peers; success in competitive funding arenas; publications in peer reviewed journals within the past five years; and contribution to research within the university and the discipline. The award will be given to an individual researcher, not to a research project, and this award is to recognize personal research excellence.
Background:
Mrs. Hesta MacDonald, in memory of her husband, the late Dr. Stewart MacDonald, generously provided funding to create an annual award for excellence in health research. Dr. Stewart MacDonald was a graduate of PWC and Dalhousie University. He was one of Charlottetown's longest-serving doctors, assisting in surgeries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital until well into his 80s. Dr. MacDonald served as Chief of Staff of the PEI Hospital, was Health Officer for the City of Charlottetown, Medical Officer for the Riverside Hospital, and spent 18 years as Registrar of the PEI Medical Council. As well, he was Senior Medical Officer and Senior Pensions Officer with the Department of Veterans Affairs for many years.
