Background:
Kate VanGerven (Class of 2013], graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a BA, English major. She served on the UPEI Student Union executive for three years including one year as president After graduation, she moved to Ottawa to work on Parliament Hill for Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown. In 2015, she worked on now-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's tour team during the Liberal Party of Canada's federal campaign. After the election in October 2015, Kate joined the Prime Minister's Office. She currently works in Ottawa as Advance to the Prime Minister and is actively involved with the Ottawa Chapter of the UPEI Alumni Association. In Kate's words, "My experiences and relationships at UPEI gave me everything. I had an entire community of people committed to me succeeding as a student and as a person. If I had a project in mind, there was staff from across campus that would hear me out, fine tune it, and jump on board. If I gave my time to my peers, they paid it back tenfold. I served on the UPEI Student Union Executive for three years, including one as President, but I also developed side projects that kept me busy and introduced me to people across campus I never would have met if I only went to class. When I graduated in 2013,1 felt I had truly made the most of my university career and graduated with not only a Bachelor of Arts, but a wide range of transferable skills developed by my involvement in extracurricular projects."In acknowledgement of everything that UPEI offered to Kate as a student, she is establishing this award to give back to her alma mater and to provide an opportunity for other students to experience the value of donor support.
