Awarded to a deserving third- or second-year student in Veterinary Medicine who attended a Prince Edward Island high school and who demonstrates interest in equine or canine veterinary medicine.
Background:
Roy and Margaret Crosby were residents of Meadowbank, Prince Edward Island. They showed much kindness to the farm animals under their care, but had a particular fondness for horses and dogs. This award was established in their memory by the executors of their estates in accordance with their wishes. Dr. E. Lawson Drake was a friend and neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Crosby. Here are a few thoughts that Dr. Drake expressed in memory of them: Roy and Margaret Crosby farmed in Meadowbank PEI on land that had been in the Crosby family since 1786. To them their animals were neither pets nor chattels; they were their partners in working the farm. Roy's love was horse and the stable was warm long after the tractor came. Margaret's love was the dogs who were her and Roy's companions in the fields about the yard and by the hearth. The Crosbys were ordinary unpretentious folk who established this award not from accumulated wealth but from their belief in the value of education and the conviction that the care of domestic animals is a high calling worthy of their encouragement.
