Mature Students

Mature students add to the fabric of the university through their career and life experiences, and UPEI offers programs and academic support for adults who either want to earn their first degree, finish an uncompleted degree, or add to an existing college diploma, while maintaining their careers.

Employers realize employees who have higher education are more likely to generate new knowledge and to innovate, and post-secondary degrees are very often required to obtain employment. By continuing to learn, people in the workforce increase their employability, confidence, and career satisfaction.

For the purpose of admission to UPEI program, a "mature student" is:

  • a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • out of school for at least three years
  • 21 years of age on or before the first day of classes

Students must submit transcripts of any high school and/or post-secondary work completed for the purposes of prerequisite checking, and a resume outlining academic goals and academic and employment activities for the past three years. Most UPEI programs require specific high school prerequisites for admission, but others like our Bachelor of Integrated Studies may not. Assessment of prior learning and workplace experiences may also be considered.
